Gunpowder Falls Maryland: complete fly fishing guide
A 7.2-mile catch-and-release wild trout tailwater 30 minutes north of downtown Baltimore. The Gunpowder is Maryland's flagship trout fishery — cold year-round below Prettyboy Reservoir, dense Sulphur hatches in May-June, and wild brown trout that hold in pocket water you can wade in tennis shoes.

Why fish here
The Gunpowder is the closest legitimate wild-trout tailwater to the entire DC-Baltimore corridor. The 7.2-mile catch-and-release section below Prettyboy Dam holds wild brown trout in densities approaching limestone-water levels — well over 1,000 fish per mile in the productive sections. The water runs 50-58°F all year because of the bottom-release schedule from Prettyboy Reservoir, which means hatches occur on a schedule similar to a Pennsylvania limestoner.
The Sulphur hatch is the headline event. Mid-May through end of June, evening dry-fly fishing on wild browns rivals anything east of the Catskills. Outside the Sulphur run, the river produces year-round on midges, BWOs, terrestrials, and streamers.
The river, section by section
Catch-and-release wild trout section — Prettyboy Dam to Bluemount Road (7.2 miles)
Access: Three main parking areas off I-83 Hereford exit. From east to west: Bunker Hill Road (largest lot, near Hereford High School, includes camping access and bathroom facilities), Masemore Road (popular but often full), Falls Road (direct access to the upper section as far as Prettyboy Dam). Character: Pocket water, gravel runs, deeper pools below downed timber. Average 30-40 feet wide. Heavy tree canopy keeps the river dim early in the evening. Species mix: Wild brown trout dominate. Occasional brook trout in the upper mile. Crowding: Heavy on weekends, especially during Sulphur season. Weekday mornings produce best. Notable hatches: Hendrickson (mid-April, 1-3 pm), BWO (year-round on overcast days), Sulphur (mid-May through June, evening), tan caddis (mid-May through August).
The catch-and-release section requires artificial flies or lures only. Single hooks. All trout must be immediately released. The regulation has held this water in wild-trout condition since the late 1970s.
Middle section — Bluemount Road to Corbett Road (4 miles)
Access: Roadside parking along Bluemount Road; trail access from Corbett Road. Character: Slower, deeper, wider. More pool fishing than the upper section. Species mix: Wild browns plus stocked trout that move up from the put-and-take section. Regulations: Statewide wild trout regulations — 2 trout per day, no size or tackle restrictions. Notable hatches: Same as upper section, slightly delayed (4-7 days behind the C&R water).
Lower stretch — Corbett Road downstream
Access: Multiple roadside pullouts. Character: Wider, slower, warmer in summer. Species mix: Stocked trout (spring and fall stockings); smallmouth bass move up in summer. Regulations: Put-and-take stocked trout regs. When to fish: March-April for stocked trout; warm-water transition fishery in summer.

Gear notes
The Gunpowder fishes best on a 9 ft 4wt or 5wt. Smaller stretches in the upper C&R section reward an 8.5 ft 3wt or 4wt for tighter casts.
Floating line, weight-forward, in trout taper. Leader 9 ft 5X for dry fly; 9 ft 4X tapered down to 6X dropper for nymphing.
Wet-wading is fine June-September. Felt soles or studded rubber for the slick gravel — bare rubber slips in the pocket water below Falls Road. Polarized glasses required: the river runs in heavy tree shade and you can't see fish in the lies without polarization.

- Closest gauge: USGS Big Gunpowder Falls at Falls Road. Above 200 cfs is wadeable; above 400 cfs is high water; spring runoff windows can push 600+ cfs and shut down wading.
When NOT to fish here
- Spring runoff after heavy rain. The Gunpowder rises fast and clears slowly compared to limestone water. Check the gauge before driving.
- Saturday mornings during Sulphur season. Crowds are real. Weekday or after-dark.
- Thunderstorm conditions. The catch-and-release section is heavily wooded and lightning is a real risk. Seek shelter at parking areas.
- Mid-summer afternoon, lower river. Below Corbett Road, summer water temps push above 70°F by 2 pm. Catch-and-release with a thermometer; don't kill fish for sport.
