Jaw mechanism

The practical floor for reliable grip is around size 26–28. Very small hooks (size 30 and below) can rock slightly at minimum jaw gap in well-used vises. For tyers who tie exclusively in sizes 24 and smaller, a vise with a purpose-built small-hook jaw is worth comparing.
Long-term wear data supports the design. After 15 years of bench use and thousands of flies on one vise, the hardened jaw surfaces show micro-scratches but have never slipped a hook, and the cam lever has never needed adjustment. The jaw is the part of the vise that earns the price.
Rotary function
The head rotates full 360 degrees via a rear knob. Indexed positions at 90-degree intervals lock the head for tying at a fixed angle — useful for techniques where you need a reference position for material placement before spinning. Dubbing loops, thread wraps, and palmering hackle in rotary eliminates thread count management. The head stays on the hook's axis through the full rotation, which is the specific thing that makes true rotary different from a vise that simply pivots.
Slight wobble at the extremes of rotation develops with age on the Traveler — the tolerance is not as tight as the Renzetti Master series (~$550) or a Griffin Montana Mongoose at a similar price. For most pattern tying the wobble is imperceptible at the hook. For production tying where indexed precision matters on every wrap, the Master is the appropriate upgrade.
The rotation runs on unsealed bearings, so grit and thread fibers stiffen it gradually over the years. A drop of light oil on the rotation collar once a season keeps it smooth — the only recurring maintenance the vise asks for.

The pedestal base is cast metal and heavy enough to hold the arm at full extension during hard wrapping — it sits firmly on a bench without creeping under tension. Compared to the Regal Medallion
The Regal Medallion Vise is the other common recommendation at this price tier. The Regal uses a spring-tension jaw — drop the hook in and the spring grabs it; no lever required. The Regal is faster for production tying where you change hooks frequently. The trade: the Regal is not true rotary (the head rotates around an off-center pivot, not the hook's axis), and the spring tension does not adjust for hook wire weight. A wide-gauge hook can compress the spring to its limit; a small-wire midge hook may not engage fully.
The cam lever also gives more feedback on grip — you feel when the hook is seated correctly, where the Regal's spring gives no such signal.
